Strengthening Voices Committee
Strengthening Voices is Boston Urban Asthma Coalitions new and exciting
Community Outreach Initiative! Strengthening Voices Project is our effort
to inform the community through community friendly educational workshops and
Leadership and Development trainings. There are so many barriers that limit
families from participating in community meetings. Strengthening Voices is
identifying and working towards minimizing some of those barriers. Since our
information sessions target families, and are usually held around the supper
hour, SV provides a nutritious meal and childcare services, and in special
circumstances transportation. Strengthening Voices meets families where they
are. We have assembled a team of asthma and environmental experts that will
come to your community center, community group, church, or wherever the call
in Boston community may be to have an intimate informative discussion about
asthma management, housing rights, and healthy schools. SV also identifies
resources throughout the city, such as asthma swim programs, fitness programs,
asthma camps and other programs beneficial to better managing their children's
asthma. At the end of each session a raffle is held with the opportunity for
families to win free asthma management supplies.
Through BUAC's Leadership and Development Training project parents receive training tools that will assist them in advocating for themselves, their families, and their communities. 11 Parent Asthma Leaders, PAL's have successfully graduated from the project and play a significant role in BUAC's decision making process. They are represented on each of BUAC's committees; Steering, Healthy Affordable Housing, Healthy Schools, and Health. Their participation is essential in developing BUAC's agenda as well as identifying issues that directly impact their communities.
